Basic Wilderness First Aid

This course covers the most important basic first aid skills required to manage common medical and trauma emergencies at home and at the workplace until emergency services arrive to take over. Adapted especially for the Wilderness and remote area workplace.
CPR in this course complies with the latest guidelines released by the American Heart Association.

Using a skills guide, each student is individually assessed on the following:
• CPR Techniques
• Choking Management
Practical Assessment (Simulated Rescue Scenario outside the classroom):
Realistic scenarios with realistic injuries for gaining practical experience
• Assess, diagnose, treat and stabilize an injured person ;
• Use of a spinal immobilization device/stretcher
• Safely secure and transport an injured person over a determined distance to an environmentally acceptable location

Intermediate Wilderness First Aid
US ID 120496: Provide Risk-Based Primary Emergency Care/First Aid in the Workplace
NQF Level 2 - Credits 5
Pre-Requisites:
• Communication at NQF Level 1 or ABET Level 4.
• Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.
In order for the learner to achieve this unit standard the learner must already be competent in:
• Unit Standard ID 8494: "Demonstrate an understanding of HIV/AIDS and its implications “
• This is included in the Intermediate Wilderness First Aid
This course is focused on enabling the participant to provide primary emergency care in response to an occupational risk induced or any health emergency in the wilderness and remote area workplace. On completion of this course the participant will be prepared to handle a wide range of Trauma and Medical Emergencies.
This is the suggested minimum requirement for people working in the wilderness and remote area industry.
This is a pre-requisite for doing the advanced first aid course.

Wilderness First Aid Online Renewal
The course is specifically for guides / staff in the hospitality, travel & tourism industry who have done First Aid training previously and need to renew their certificates. The previous training does not have to have been done by SMART Response.
