SMART RESPONSE is a training company specialising in Remote Wilderness First Aid, Structural Lodge Firefighting and Health and Safety preparedness training, developed specifically for the Wilderness Tourism Hospitality Industry in the South African Bush Environment. The owner and driving force behind this small but highly effective and successful business venture, which began in 2006, is Andrew Miller, who, after spending over a decade in both private and government emergency management services, gaining understanding and experience in firefighting techniques, medical intervention services and rescue, realised there was (and still is) a desperate and deep unfulfilled gap between time of injury or illness in an isolated area, to time of arrival of suitable emergency personnel to scene, especially in the wilderness tourism arena. Realising the high-risk of an emergency occurring in a remote and isolated area, the necessity and value of having prepared and trained staff available to respond to these emergencies, Andrew developed his training methods around situational awareness, personal safety, competency, and prevention of remote wilderness emergencies, turning his students into effective lifesavers that now have the ability to intervene, and, who remember their skills long after completing their training.
We offer the wilderness tourism and hospitality industry an emergency management algorithm, in other words a chromatic flow-chart of actions, that is focused on stabilising immediate threats to life and are logical to follow. We go above and beyond business-compliance by ensuring that all lodge staff, regardless of literacy level, experience, or educational background, receive detailed curriculum and informative real-life practical behaviour-modification training, focused on a positive outcome of stressful emergency situations, relevant to their working conditions. In remote and isolated regions of this vast landmass, functional emergency services are scarce and perhaps not suitably trained or equipped, while the possibility of injury or illness remains high.
When creating a host-guest relationship with local and international guests and visitors, and thereby accepting responsibility for such individuals, it is vital that host staff are thoroughly conversive in the rapid application of basic life support skills and emergency first aid.
SMART RESPONSE offers comprehensive, practical, and environment-specific training for the remote first responder that empowers your team to care for and preserve a life under sometimes difficult and realistic conditions. Our preparedness learning interventions are dynamic inter-active and outcomes-based, taken from real-life situations that have occurred in lodges in Southern Africa.
Over the last fifteen years Andrew has fostered a healthy relationship with governing bodies and training facilities such as guide training academies and schools, the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa, and The Southern African Wildlife College, as well as thousands of lodge staff including field guides (he is a qualified field guide himself), APU members, security, and general lodge staff. This places him in a unique position to understand the risk associated with this industry.
A SMART course is designed to boost an accelerated-learning curve with enhanced memory-retention. Our students complete their courses with a new life-skill, geared to accommodate the complications of unexpected remote emergencies situations.
Allow us to become you one-stop solution for all your health and safety requirements – it’s the SMART thing to do.
